15 Things To Do In South East Louisiana That Isn’t New Orleans

I know South East Louisiana is often known for New Orleans and Bourbon Street. But, you want to know a little secret? There are more things to do than party and there are parts of Louisiana that are even more Southern than New Orleans. Keep in mind, Louisiana is known as Sportsman’s paradise, so a few of these are geared more towards the outdoorsman (and outdoorswoman). But, I’ve listed a little something for everyone.

So without further ado, here are my top 15 picks of things to do in South East Louisiana that isn’t New Orleans:

1. Kayaking and/or Kayak Fishing at PAC Kayak Rentals in Point Aux Chenes.

  • Point Aux Chenes is actually located in the city of Montegut in Terrebonne Parish.
  • It is owner run and operated
  • PAC attracts international and local fishermen by providing
    • Lodging (RV Park and rental accommodations)
    • A full tackle and bait shop
    • Charter Fishing
    • Kayak Rentals
    • A “Mothership” can transport you and your kayak further out than you would normally paddle yourself
  • They also host various fishing tournaments a fishing rodeos throughout the year.

2. Go charter fishing in Grand Isle

  • Grand Isle is one of Louisiana’s only “beaches”
  • Located in Jefferson Parish
  • Known for the Tarpon Fishing Rodeo

3. Visit Chauvin Sculpture Garden

  • FREE

  • Mostly religious and Cajun inspired pieces
  • Located on Bayou Petit Caillou

4. Walk through the Mandalay Nature Trail in Houma

  • FREE
  • Located in Terrebonne Parish
  • 3/4 mile out and back hike to a marsh observation deck where you can observe waterfowl and alligators

5.  Tour Greenwood Alligator Farms or take a swamp tour to look for gators

  • Get up close and personal with alligators and other swamp wildlife
  • Explore the scenic bayous and swamps of South East Louisiana via boat

6. Bayou Country Children’s Museum located in Thibodaux

  • Open 7 days a week
  • Most appropriate for children 1-10 years of age
  • Adults without children can still tour the museum being guided by a staff member

10. Go to a Wild Life Refuge in Folsom

  • Over 900 acres

11. Wild Life Encounter at Barn Hill Preserve in Ethel
